Scarthyla vigilans

On March 13th, 2012, my friend Brett Thompson and i came across this small frog along a small stream in Chaguaramas. We've been herping there for years and couldn't immediately identify it. We saw three individuals, all of which resembled Scinax rubra. These little frogs were active during early afternoon hours and seem to live in the dense grasses alongside streams. They are very difficult to catch and after and hour or so, we finally caught one and got some pictures. They were no more than 20mm in length. A further search in the surrounding area yielded no other specimens. I did some research online and came across this website and a blog stating that this frog has been spotted in the southern end of Trinidad for some years now, but has never been recorded in the north western part of the island. Another local herpetologist, Saiyaad ali, says he has seen them in large numbers in Palo seco in southern Trinidad and he confirmed that the picture i took of the frog was definitely that of Scarthyla vigilans.
